Within seconds, an AI-generated summary appeared, providing detailed information on the popularity of sourdough bread. Corroborating links were also provided to support the summary's content.

This feature, known as the "AI snapshot," is driven by Google's extensive language models, sourcing information from the open web. Clicking on the "bear claw" icon in the top right corner of the box revealed a split-sentence view of the AI snapshot, with corresponding links to the sources of information for each sentence. This emphasis on corroboration distinguishes Google's AI implementation from others in the market.

Reid proceeded to conduct another search, this time for the best Bluetooth speakers for the beach. Again, standard search results quickly appeared, followed by AI-generated summaries highlighting key features to consider in a speaker. Buying guides and shopping links were conveniently provided alongside the summaries. By adding the phrase "under $100," the snapshot refreshed with new summaries and recommendations.

This AI-driven search results page, fueled by Google's advanced language models such as PaLM 2 and MUM (Multitask Unified Model), represents a colorful and AI-first approach that redefines the search experience. Particularly on mobile devices, the AI snapshot often occupies the entire first page of search results.

To access these AI snapshots, users need to opt in to a feature called Search Generative Experience (SGE) within Search Labs. Not all searches trigger an AI response, as Google's algorithms determine when it is more useful than standard results. Additionally, sensitive topics like health and finances are currently excluded from AI interference. However, during testing, AI snapshots were generated for various searches, including chocolate chip cookies, Adele, nearby coffee shops, and the best movies of 2022. While AI may not eliminate the traditional "10 blue links," it certainly reduces their prominence on the page.

Google executives repeatedly emphasize that SGE is an experimental feature. Nevertheless, they view it as a fundamental long-term change in the search landscape. AI adds a new layer to search, enabling users to ask more refined questions and receive comprehensive answers while being guided to explore related topics.

Although opting in to SGE might seem like a minor move compared to Microsoft's AI-centric Bing redesign or the novelty of ChatGPT, it marks the first step in reimagining how billions of people access online information and how Google monetizes its services.

Challenges and Solutions

Google acknowledges the current state of its search results and recognizes that many searches are already well-served. The days of relying solely on "10 blue links" are long gone, with Google now offering image and voice search capabilities. However, there remains a category of queries for which Google has struggled to provide satisfactory results.
